Australia Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491)

Australia’s Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) is for eligible skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory, or sponsored by an eligible relative. It allows holders to live, work and study in designated regional areas for up to five years. Eligible holders may later qualify for permanent residence through subclass 191.

Subclass 491 visa pathways

  • State or territory nomination: Each state or territory sets its own nomination criteria.
  • Eligible family sponsorship: An eligible relative who meets Home Affairs requirements may sponsor you.

Key eligibility requirements

Applicants generally need to have an eligible occupation, a suitable skills assessment, an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect, an invitation to apply, the required points score (at least 65), competent English, and to meet age, health and character requirements. You must also meet the relevant nomination or family-sponsorship criteria. Meeting the minimum points threshold does not guarantee an invitation or visa grant.

What can the visa offer?

  • Live, work and study in designated regional Australia while the visa is valid.
  • Travel to and from Australia while the visa remains valid.
  • Potentially apply for permanent residence through subclass 191 if you meet the requirements.

The subclass 491 is a provisional visa, not permanent residence. Visa charges and eligibility rules can change, so check the official Department of Home Affairs subclass 491 visa page for current details.
