What Is the Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)?

The Subclass 190 visa is an Australian permanent residency visa for eligible skilled workers nominated by an Australian state or territory government. Unlike the Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189), it requires state or territory nomination. Successful applicants can live, work and study in Australia as permanent residents, subject to applicable laws and visa conditions.

The visa is points-tested, and you must be nominated and invited to apply. Meeting the minimum points requirement does not guarantee nomination or an invitation.

Key Benefits of the Subclass 190 Visa

  • Australian permanent residency: Successful applicants become Australian permanent residents.
  • Work and study rights: Live, work and study in Australia.
  • Medicare: Eligible permanent residents can access Australia’s public healthcare scheme under applicable rules.
  • Family inclusion: Eligible family members may be included, subject to requirements.
  • Potential citizenship pathway: You may become eligible to apply for citizenship if you meet the relevant residence and other requirements.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) Eligibility

Eligibility depends on your age, occupation, skills assessment, English proficiency, points score and the nomination requirements of the state or territory.

1. Age requirement

You must generally be under 45 years old when invited to apply.

2. Eligible occupation

Your occupation must meet the relevant skilled migration and state or territory nomination requirements. Occupation lists and nomination criteria can differ between jurisdictions and may change.

3. Skills assessment

You generally need a suitable skills assessment for your nominated occupation from the relevant assessing authority. The assessment must meet the Department of Home Affairs requirements at the relevant stage.

4. English language proficiency

At the time of invitation, you must generally have at least Competent English. Your English results may also affect your points score.

5. Points test

You must score at least 65 points to meet the general minimum threshold. Points may be awarded for factors such as age, English proficiency, skilled employment, qualifications and other eligible criteria. Meeting 65 points does not guarantee an invitation.

6. State or territory nomination

You must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government. Each jurisdiction sets its own nomination criteria, which may include occupation priorities, work experience, employment or residence requirements.

7. Health and character requirements

You and relevant family members must meet applicable health, character and other visa requirements.

How Does the Subclass 190 Points Test Work?

Your points score is assessed under Australia’s skilled migration points test. Factors may include:

  • Age
  • English language ability
  • Skilled employment experience in Australia and overseas
  • Educational qualifications
  • Eligible Australian study and other study-related criteria
  • Partner-related criteria, where applicable
  • Other eligible factors under the current points test

Your score depends on your circumstances and supporting evidence. Use the official Subclass 190 points table to check current criteria.

How to Apply for the Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

  1. Assess your profile: Review your age, occupation, qualifications, work experience and English proficiency.
  2. Check occupation and skills assessment requirements: Identify the relevant assessing authority and criteria.
  3. Calculate your points: Estimate your score against the current official points test.
  4. Explore state nomination options: Review the current eligibility and nomination pathways of relevant states or territories.
  5. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI): Submit your EOI through SkillSelect.
  6. Seek nomination and receive an invitation: Follow the relevant state or territory process. If nominated, you may receive an invitation to apply.
  7. Lodge your visa application: If invited, submit your application and supporting documents within the specified deadline, generally 60 calendar days.
  8. Complete required checks: Meet applicable health, character and other requirements.

The exact process and nomination criteria can vary by jurisdiction and may change. An Expression of Interest is not itself a visa application.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) Fees

The Department of Home Affairs currently lists the main applicant visa application charge as from AUD 6,140, with concessions applying in limited circumstances. Additional charges may apply for family members, and other costs can include skills assessment, English tests, medical examinations, police certificates and document preparation. Fees can change; check the official Subclass 190 visa page for the latest charge before applying.

Subclass 190 vs Subclass 189 vs Subclass 491

  • Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated: A permanent visa requiring state or territory nomination.
  • Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent: A permanent visa that does not require state or territory nomination.
  • Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional): A provisional regional visa with its own eligibility and pathway requirements.

The most suitable pathway depends on your occupation, points score, experience, location preferences and eligibility under current rules. Compare our Subclass 189 visa guidance and Subclass 491 visa guidance to understand the differences.
